Leonardo da Vinci was painting her in Florence, in the same years Michelangelo was working across the city.
The two of them could not stand each other, and the city had just set them to paint opposite walls of the same hall. I observed him at the easel with her sitting in front of him. Before the glass and the rope and the crowds, she was a woman in a room, holding still.
What hangs here is not the woman behind the glass. She is young again, and she is in this century with the rest of us.
