Grant Wood painted American Gothic in 1930. It has become a twisted reality, and here is why.
The photograph cannot exist. Byron McKeeby died in 1950 and Nan Wood Graham in 1990, yet here they are, old, looking at themselves in a gallery. The painting kept ageing without them. They are older inside the frame than Grant Wood ever painted them, and the house behind has been rebuilt.
