American Gothic’s Twisted Reality

Grant Wood painted American Gothic in 1930. It has become a twisted reality, and here is why.

The photograph cannot exist. Byron McKeeby died in 1950 and Nan Wood Graham in 1990, yet here they are, old, looking at themselves in a gallery. The painting kept ageing without them. They are older inside the frame than Grant Wood ever painted them, and the house behind has been rebuilt.

Two people gone for decades, looking at a version of themselves that carried on. That is where reality bends.
